Drove out of Mount Gambier for a bit to come across the Umpherston Sinkhole.  Bees are active here.  It is an unbelievable sight.  A large hole in the ground looking like a cave and when you walk down steps to the garden below you find tree ferns, green leafy bushes, vines, hydraganaes, etc.  The grounds surrounding it are well kept and the forestry is next door.  There are lovely shady areas so sit and picnic under. Left Mount Gambier bound for Casterton. Sign says: Don't privatize South Australian Forests.  Glenburnie has a racecourse.  Country is very dry. Spotted more hay, cattle and forestry trees on right and left of the road.  There were plenty of deer in the paddock on the right.  Trees were growing right and left sides of the road inpaddocks.  More sheep! Viewed an old church painted white with leadlight windows in it. Windmills sprung up in paddocks.Sheep and cattle are grazing in paddocks. Dead trees lay in piles in paddocks ready to burn. Passed Romney Marsh Stud.  Saw more red gums.  Strathdownie had old houses and a business shed and round hay bales.  Avonlea is the name of a property.  Passed Eel drain which was dry.  Cows are black.Read in the Sunday papers where they are making hats our of toad skins.  Came across bracken fern.  You could come through Penola to Hamilton. An airfield was on Springbank Road.  Casterton has a sign saying: Live safe, Play safe and work safe.Portland where we are at present is the same.  Casterton has houses, Blue Hills Nursery, School, Hospital, Top Shop, Lions Playground, an old church, Holdens Hotel, Fresh from the Farm , has a nice shopping centre, Glenelg Hotel/Motel, Glenelg River Basin and a racecourse, Sacred Heart Parish School, Cool Room Hire, Glass Gallery which is 6 k's out and a saleyard. Country is day. Took a snap at a lookout outside Casterton over hills, paddocks and trees.  Passed Pivot Park, Edenhope, Warwick Homstead properties.  In the fields saw sheep, cattle and milking cows were being fed hay. The land is all cleared except for trees planted on fence lines.  Nice to see red and white Herefords. There are plenty of historical markers around.  Passed Southern Grampians Welcome sign.  Went over Wennicott River. The edges of the road were soft.  Crossed Sypotts Creek.  Lines of hay were strewn out in a line for cows to eat.  Saw a Hereford Stud showing cattle in red and white.  More round hay bales.  Rubber tyres were put on the wall of a dam to keep sheep and cattle off it.  Rolled along over Denhills Creek and saw Burrendah property and cattle yard and more round hay bales. Colermaine had grain.. Bryan Creek and the Glenelg River Basin.  It has a chocolate factory. Hotel, Pharmacy and a Cobb and Co shop.
